1/10 – Scary island of the dead dolls “Isla de las Muñecas”, Mexico
It all started in the 1950s when Don Julian Santana Barrera decided to live alone on this small island. Once set foot on the ground, he feels like a presence. A little girl is said to have died drowned in the canal that borders the island, her doll floating nearby. Convinced of this story’s veracity, he decides to collect the old abandoned dolls and to hang them on the tree branches of the island, sometimes by a rope, sometimes by a needle stuck in their head, in order to ward off misfortune and to appease the girl’s ghost.
Don Julian Santana Barrera added thousands of dolls to the four island’s corners until his death. He was found drowned on April 17, 2001, at the age of 80, in the same place where he had discovered the girl years ago. He will have lived alone with dolls on the island for the last 50 years of his life. He leaves behind a strange work with superstition and rotting dolls.
Legend has it that the spirit of Don Julian haunts the island, waiting to be released in turn!
